Innocence & ignorance VS ignorance & arrogance

In the early part of June, my wife and I went for a short holiday in the pristine hills of Nuwera
Eliya in Central Sri Lanka. The hotel we stayed had a Scottish touch to it and was nestled
amongst the Tea estates.
Coming from a mega city into the village town we realized that the nature, culture and thought process too was transformed among the people living there. Maybe all were not naïve nor ignorant but there definitely was a rustic innocence in them. Probably they were not contaminated by the city life & the mental pollution! Of course, the social media was alive all over and it sure had its devotees but the thought process was still not arrogant.
Whether it was the security or the gardeners of the hotel -all had a nice story to relate and
were very enthusiastic to start a conversation with us with a smile and a positive attitude. This
kind of motivation and niceness with a happy attitude to serve cannot be solely inculcated by the Top Management. It has to do with the calmness and serenity of the place and also the slow pace society that is around.
On the flip side, one finds extreme arrogance and a lot of ignorance in most city folks. A
professional person will network to have a great binge of drinking & socializing with very minimum effort to pick up any knowledge that could be gained by from attending such forums or seminars.
Most will talk ill of the politicians and also after a few drinks the terrible talk about their
spouses. There will hardly be any intellectual talk on ideas, policies or thoughts on life etc…
The aspect of showing off is not seen in the villages or the hill country side that we stayed in.
Even if he is rich farmer he will still talk politely and softly to you. An experience we went
through. He or she is ever ready to learn from the town person and we felt we could impart
some knowledge to them.
Of course an innocent person is vulnerable in a big city and that is the reason that ignorance
surely is not a bliss! Surely there should be ways and means to educate the people on the
periphery of financial matters and life skills. Community development is essential and it can be a PPP model.
All in all, the niceness and simplicity was a huge balm to our fast thinking thought process. The freshness of the air outside and in their thoughts was very invigorating! We should embrace the modernization in this world with a slow pace….
